“Children’s Safety Is Our Shared Responsibility”: Meeting-Discussion on the Risks of the Digital Environment

The meeting-discussion entitled “Children’s Safety Is Our Shared Responsibility” organized by the Ministry of High-Tech Industry of the Republic of Armenia in collaboration with the Information Systems Agency of Armenia (ISAA), the Union of Operators of Armenia, the International Telecommunication Union, and “For Ladies Club”.

Taking place in the context of Women’s Month, the topic of the event recognized the role of women, specifically mothers, in the education and upbringing of children, and guaranteed their safety in the digital environment. Inmates of relevant fields, including educators, mothers, and other interested participants, actively discussed current challenges that exist in the safety of children in the digital environment, as well as measures to overcome these challenges.

At the event, Advisor to the Minister of High-Tech Industry of the Republic of Armenia, Martha Sandoyan, addressed the guests. In addition, she explained the actions taken by the Ministry of High-Tech Industry to protect children at the web and the role of public awareness in this process.

Co-Founder “For Ladies Club”, Mariam Martirosyan, addressed the participants. She made her speech on the significance of holding such events and expressed the view that the safety of children in the digital environment requires the participation and cooperation of specialists and parents.

Head of the Information Systems Agency of Armenia (ISAA) Strategic Communications Department, Haykanush Bagratunyan, Capacity Building Officer, Anzhela Galstyan, and Junior Analyst, Karapet Tashyan addressed the participants with welcoming appeals and topics of the field: cyber security, phishing and other issues related to online risks. The current challenges of cybersecurity, the culture of data protection, and the prevention of risks and dangers associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) were presented. At the same time, the importance of AI in the modern world was emphasized, particularly in the context of its effective application in the field of education. Special reference was made to the impact of deepfakes and to accessible tools for protection against disinformation.

Kristine Gyonjyan, Director of the Union of Operators of Armenia, also presenting the initiatives implemented within the framework of cooperation with the International Telecommunication Union, spoke about the role of parents in the process of ensuring children’s online safety, emphasizing the importance of family involvement—especially that of parents.

The meeting served as an open discussion platform where mothers and experts shared their experiences, concerns, and proposals aimed at shaping a safe digital environment for children, emphasizing the continuous nature of such initiatives, which contributes to raising awareness among different groups of society and strengthening children’s online safety.
